Hi, I have a colony of miniscule black ants living in a large potted Jade plant which I keep on my kitchen counter in the winter and outside in the summer. I let them live inside for the last 2 winters because they’re miniscule, and aren’t at all invasive in terms of getting into food and [...] Yesterday the basil plant on the back porch looked like this: The rover ants were foraging like crazy.
It isn’t common to see so many on one plant.
Where are the nectaries in basil flowers? What are these ants doing? In any case, the story was very different this [...] Whatever happened to that fraction of a rover ant colony we found in a flower pot? As any sensible colony would do under the same circumstances, they raised up some of the pale-colored males characteristic of their species. While trying to get a decent photograph of the males this morning, I noticed something else. There were workers with [...] The spring flowers are lovely here in Arizona. The “peanut cactus” flower is a brilliant red-orange. The ground is covered with mounds of pale pink Mexican primroses. Can you spot the rover ants that are hiding the photographs? |
